The
monthly conference schedule is
available in the department. Once the schedule is published,
any
necessary changes are your responsibility - Program
administration
must be notified of all changes.
Although most conferences tend to be in a standard
lecture format,
it is important to generate discussion during the lecture.
All
residents should have read the chapter(s) in Tintinalli
that best
corresponds to the topic and should be able to participate
in the
discussion.
- Workshop Series These are 4 rotating
workshops designed to give the medical students and
interns an overview to the skills needed for working
in an Emergency setting. You will attend workshops
once during your first ED month. Topics covered are
Orthopedics/Splinting, Suturing/Basic wound care,
Ophthalmology/Slit lamp, Resuscitation. In your 2nd and 3rd years, you will be teaching these workshops.
- Trauma Conference Semi-monthly
conferences run by the trauma department. Presentations
are by surgical attending or chief resident. In your
third year, you are expected to present one conference.
- Radiology A monthly lecture in
which faculty from the department of radiology will
cover selected topics. Emphasis is on radiographic
interpretation and evaluation.
- Critical Case An interactive case
discussion based on the critical cases seen in the
recent weeks. Format for this conference is an open
discussion with comments from all attending. Discussion
will then revolve around key points in managing these
two to three cases. The resident involved in the case
will present and provide the follow-up. Consultants,
including Radiology may be present to provide specific
feedback.
- Combined Conferences We will be
have combined conferences with other disciplines throughout the year.
- Core Content These are assigned
readings with on-line exams. The text we will be using
is Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine and will be provided

then start again so that you should have read it at
least twice during your residency. Selected chapters
from Roberts and Hedges and Fleischer's Pediatric
Emergency Medicine will also be covered.
- Outside/Guest Lectures We will
be bringing in selected outside speakers to cover
selected topics during the years. As these are people
invited to speak, attendance by all ER staff and residents
should be 100%.
- Ultrasound Formatted and lead by
Drs. Kumasaka and Isenberg, these presentations include Code Blue
films and discussing selected cases. We will be insisting
that all residents attend these conferences. Both
resident and staff cases will be discussed in a confidential
manner to improve patient care.
- Journal Club It will be the residents'
responsibility to evaluate the paper with emphasis
on: materials and methods, statistics, type of study
and results. It will be the faculty responsibility
to help with the above and to lead the discussion.
The papers will be assigned in a rotating fashion.
- Toxicology Dr. Harris will review
key topics in toxicology through a series of talks
and guest lectures. Topics include: Initial approach
to the poisoned patient, management of common overdoses,
and controversies in management of selected cases.
