Guidelines for Promotion


Purpose
We anticipate every resident who enters the program will graduate three years later; however, satisfactory performance is needed each year for continuation in the program and/or advancement to the next level.

Responsibilities
PGY-1 to PGY-2
  1. Satisfactory 6 mo performance evaluations from the residency director.
  2. Completion of departmental and hospital chart audit requirements as determined by QI Director.
  3. Completion of departmental and hospital charting in an appropriate timeframe.
  4. Completion of all first year rotations with acceptable evaluations.
  5. Completion of ACLS and ATLS provider course.
  6. Satisfactory conference attendance ( >75% total; up to 5% may be review of video).
  7. Adequate progress on resident project as determined by program director and research director (written proposal and timeline for completion)
  8. Completion of at least 20 follow-up encounters
  9. Dictation of at least 20 critical cases
  10. Procedure log documentation minimum of following procedures (may include procedure lab)
    • Intubations 30
    • Cardioversion/Defib 3
    • Chest tubes 3
    • Lumbar puncture 5
    • Cricothyrotomy 1
    • Pericardiocentesis 1
    • Peritoneal lavage 1
    • Dislocation reduction 10
    • Cardiac pacing 2
    • Vaginal delivery 10
    • Central venous access 10
    • Bedside ultrasound 20
    • Conscious sedation 5
  11. Documentation of participation in resuscitations:
    • Adult medical 10
    • Adult trauma 5
    • Pediatric medical 2
    • Pediatric trauma 1
  12. Completion of sexual offense training, which includes review of materials, observation of one exam, discussion with SANE director, and written exam.
  13. Pass USMLE III examination
  14. Completion of procedure lab
  15. Completion of assigned core content exams
  16. Completion of oral exams
  17. Completion of inservice exam
  18. Practices in a safe, expedient manner, well versed in initial evaluations and common ED complaints as determined by the residency director with input from the promotions committee.
  19. Performs in a professional manner as determined by the residency director with input from the promotions committee.
  20. Demonstrates a level of confidence and clinical competence to progress to a less supervised role as determined by the residency director with input from the Promotions Committee.
  21. Completes 3 EMS ride alongs.
  22. Completes 8 tutorials.
  23. Completes rotation, faculty, program, and institutional evaluations and administrative tasks in a timely fashion.
PGY-2 to PGY-3
  1. Satisfactory 6 mo performance evaluations from the residency director
  2. Completion of departmental and hospital chart audit requirements as determined by QI Director.
  3. Completion of departmental and hospital charting in an appropriate timeframe.
  4. Completion of all second year rotations with acceptable evaluations.
  5. Completion of PALS provider course.
  6. Satisfactory conference attendance ( >75% total up to 5% may be review of video).
  7. Adequate progress on resident project as determined by program director and research director
  8. Completion of 40 follow up encounterss (total PGY-1 and 2).
  9. Dictation of 50 critical cases (total PGY-1 and 2).
  10. Total (PGY-1 and 2) procedure log documentation minimum of following procedures (may include procedure lab)
    • Intubations 40
    • Cardioversion/Defib 6
    • Chest tubes 8
    • Lumbar puncture 10
    • Cricothyrotomy 2
    • Pericardiocentesis 2
    • Peritoneal lavage 2
    • Dislocation reduction 10
    • Cardiac pacing 4
    • Vaginal delivery 10

  11. Documentation of participation in resuscitations (total PGY-1 and 2):
    • Adult medical 20
    • Adult trauma (TTA) 10
    • Peds medical 5
    • Peds trauma (TTA) 3
  12. Completion of procedure lab
  13. Completion of assigned core content exams
  14. Takes oral exam and passes at least one station
  15. Takes inservice exam
  16. Able to act independently with a wide variety of patients, with expeditious, directed evaluations and work-ups as determined by the residency director with input from the Promotions Committee.
  17. Demonstrates a level of confidence and clinical competence to progress to a supervisory role as determined by the residency director with input from the promotions committee.
  18. Performs in a professional manner as determined by the residency director with input from the promotions committee.
  19. Completes assigned run reports or other EMT or paramedic sessions.
  20. Completes rotation, faculty, program, and institutional evaluations and administrative tasks in a timely fashion.
Graduation from Residency
  1. Satisfactory 6 mo performance evaluations from the residency director
  2. Completion of departmental and hospital chart audit requirements as determined by QI Director
  3. Completion of departmental and hospital charting in an appropriate timeframe.
  4. Completion of all third year rotations with acceptable evaluations.
  5. Satisfactory conference attendance ( >75% total up to 5% may be review of video).
  6. Passes oral exams
  7. Completes resident project as determined by program and research director.
  8. Completion of 60 follow up encounters (total PGY1,2,3).
  9. Dictation of 80 critical cases (total PGY1,2,3).
  10. Total (PGY1,2,3) procedure log documentation minimum of following procedures (may include procedure lab):
    • Intubations 50
    • Cardioversion/Defib 10
    • Chest tubes 10
    • Lumbar puncture 15
    • Cricothyrotomy 3
    • Pericardiocentesis 3
    • Peritoneal lavage 3
    • Dislocation reduction 10
    • Cardiac pacing 6
    • Vaginal delivery 10
    • Central venous access 20
    • Bedside ultrasound 100
    • Conscious sedation 15
  11. Documentation of participation in resuscitations total (PGY1,2,3):
    • Adult medical 45
    • Adult trauma (TTA) 35
    • Peds medical 15
    • Peds trauma (TTA) 10
  12. Completion of procedure lab.
  13. Completion of assigned core content exams.
  14. Completes assigned talks.
  15. Takes inservice exam.
  16. Able to independently manage all aspects of the ED including patient care, patient flow, teaching, personnel with a wide variety of patients, with expeditious, directed evaluations and work-ups as determined by the residency director with input from the promotions committee.
  17. Performs in a professional manner as determined by the residency director with input from the promotions committee.
  18. Completes assigned teaching requirements.
  19. Passes EKG examination.
  20. Completes rotation, faculty, program, and institutional evaluations and administrative tasks in a timely fashion.
